Asia is vibrant and dynamic market and is comprised of developing regions that remain focused on the deployment of 2G wireless services as well as developed markets which are focused on high speed broadband, WiMax and 3G rollouts. Emerson addresses the challenges of each in a discrete way, but leverages experiences from one into the other. The ability to leverage experience across geographies and markets is a theme that will reoccur through CommsConnect as it is central to defining our value proposition locally, regionally and globally.
In an authored article published earlier this year, Huang Sheng from Emerson Network Power China commented on infrastructure changes from 2G to 3G.
How to Increase Income and Reduce Expenditure for Communication Networks
Saving energy means increasing business efficiency. With the advent of the 3G services, energy saving and emission reduction have become an important topic for the communication industry. Around the world one operator after another has instituted new measures for saving energy and increasing efficiency. As a leading supplier of network power product, solutions and integrated services, Emerson Network Power is particularly focused on this area of the communications industry. Developments in 3G network build outs are guiding developments in our portfolio of products and services with the goal of increasing our customer’s revenue (efficiency) at the same time as reducing their expenditure.
The basis for supporting the operation of the 3G network is through the large scale deployment of 3G telecom equipment rooms. As the combination of networks and integrated services is a hallmark of 3G technology, the telecom equipment room will necessarily play a more important role in these deployments. Compared with the existing 2G and 2.5G equipment rooms, the 3G equipment rooms will be physically larger, house equipment that has a greater functional diversity and subsequently broader mix of applications and more often than not be deployed in a denser format.
Correspondingly, the power consumption of the communication industry is expected to see an unprecedented rate of increase. According to recently published data in China, the annual power consumption of the communication industry there is over 20 billion kwh, and is expected to steadily increase. The cooling units alone for the BSC’s and RBS’s are estimated to consume 7 billion kwh electricity annually. It stands to reason then that the communication industry is not only perceived as a high-tech industry, but also a high power consumption industry. Further to this it is not surprising then that power consumption becomes a heavy burden on the telecom operators and has the potential to restrict the development of their enterprises. This challenge stands at the center of Emerson Network Power’s participation in the 3G equipment room approach, namely to realize energy saving and emission reduction.
At a product level, Emerson Network Power has the widest portfolio on offer in the industry, including Communication power (DC systems), Uninterruptible Power Systems (AC systems), Thermal Management (precision, high density as well as passive cooling systems), Outdoor plant, Physical Infrastructure (Racks) and a full suite of Environment monitoring and energy management systems. Each element of the portfolio offers opportunities for the reduction of energy consumption. A simple example can be found in Emerson Network Power’s unique sleep mode energy saving technology that has been applied in current communication power systems. The concept applied in this technology is where the power system selectively controls modules to start or sleep according to the system load and operating situations of the overall system through appropriate logic judgment and controls. This is done at the same time as ensuring the system redundancy is maintained optimal efficiency achieved and at a reduced level of power consumption. Further to this example, new generation outdoor plant is offered by Emerson that utilizes passive heat exchange and speed regulation technologies which in combination can save up to 1.5KWH electricity daily per base station.
Our approach to energy savings go beyond the applied technology to services and a solutions approach. Equipment room layout, optimal thermal management settings, as well as noise and radiation analysis are all considerations that are reviewed in the interests of maximizing efficiency as a whole.
Emerson plant follows the simple categorization of indoor and outdoor plant an uses best practice approaches to defining optimized solutions in both cases. A common approach of modular but fully customizable designs delivers maximum benefit in terms of standardized solutions (such as faster construction and rollout, standardized service approaches) but also offers plant solutions that fit specific Operator or tech provider communications equipment requirements.
Our commitment doesn’t end after every sale, it’s just the beginning. Emerson knows that selling equipment and solutions is just half of the optimization equation, and as the expert in enabling Business-Critical Continuity™ we make certain that network infrastructure will not go down and disrupt business.
Emerson Network Power Global Services has the ability to provide service, wherever and whenever it’s needed. We maintain the ‘health’ of the network as well as optimize existing network infrastructure by implement best practices that can cut down energy consumption.
