BANGKOK, THAILAND [October 30, 2009] – Emerson Network Power, a business of Emerson (NYSE:EMR) and the global leader in enabling Business-Critical Continuity™ recently tackled the issues of today’s telecom business and provided insights and solutions for deploying high-performance networks during its CommsConnect event in Bangkok, Thailand.
Over a hundred participants, mostly telecom operators from AIS, NSN, TOT, CAT, DTAC, UTEL, STS, SND, Ericsson and Loxley, attended the series of events which was held at the Banyan Tree last October 5 to 9. |
Participants listen while Ling Chee Hoe highlights Emerson’s latest telecom solutions for reducing operating expenses
| The CommsConnect Operator’s Day session was led by Ling Chee Hoe, general manager of the market and management organization of Emerson’s telecom business. He discussed the challenges of owning and maintaining telecom networks, such as attracting and retaining subscribers; faster roll out of scalable infrastructure, network reliability and OPEX reduction.
Ling notes that most operators are trying to overcome the CAPEX and OPEX obstacle to profitability. Moreover, the accelerating range of change is putting pressure on network operators and forcing them to deal with issues such as demands for greater reliability, efficiency and scalability.
“In response, Emerson provides customers with opportunities to protect their infrastructure goals and deal with challenges throughout their network. Our solution portfolio extends to all parts of the network, both indoor and outdoor, and throughout the data center, and encompasses alternate energy opportunities from wind to solar and fuel cell technology,” says Ling.
One of the highlights of the session was the OPEX savings portion. It focuses on Emerson’s extensive solutions – energy management, monitoring, OSP, renewable energy, and BTS/ MSC OPEX optimization solutions – and determines the savings and benefits of each through cost analysis.
Par Larsson, technical director for Emerson’s technical support group, also introduced eSure™ – the most efficient rectifier in the industry today. The eSure™ rectifier delivers industry-best performance with near 97% energy efficiency at 35% to 70% load capacity without compromising reliability. The new rectifier is based on Emerson’s reliable Netsure DC platform.
“Power consumption alone accounts for almost 50 percent of a telco’s operating expenses. And a substantial portion of it comes from power losses that occur during power conversion,” comments Larsson. He adds that the more efficient the rectifier, the lower the energy losses to the network, which in large facilities amount to over a hundred thousand of dollars in savings per year.
The half-day forum also featured Equinix – an industry partner of Emerson. Go Thiam Poh, director of operations of the leading IT&C infrastructure hosting company shared insights and best practices on how end users can secure their networks and improve on infrastructure security and flexibility.
Tan Yu Ming, Emerson’s enterprise business director for SEA, comments, “Our industry partners continue to rely on infrastructure partners such as Emerson to enable new technologies, new paths to efficiencies as well as better total cost of ownership position. We make these possible through our comprehensive portfolio of solutions – power, precision cooling, monitoring, racks and enclosures and services – that come along with our broad range of products. These solutions create synergies for the data center and infrastructure needs.
One-on-one consultation with the experts The following days served as highly interactive sessions. This series of one-on-one consultations held for each operator provided participants with detailed insights and in-depth discussions with industry leaders on issues covering power protection, telecom infrastructure solutions and other mission-critical matters.
According to Emerson consultants, based on the discussions they have had with operators, renewable energy, OPEX reduction and improved monitoring appeared to be the prevalent issues operators face in their infrastructure and data centers.
“Some of the inquiries we received delve on powering networks in remote or rural areas. It’s interesting how operators are opening up to new technologies, such as renewable energy sources from wind, solar and diesel gen set, that can make remote network sites feasible,” says Ling
“It is insightful to talk with the experts,” says a participant. “It offered outstanding ideas and insight into actual issues and how today’s technologies can yield greater benefits to our networks and consumers.”
Exclusive social event for execs As a gesture of appreciation, Emerson concluded CommsConnect with an exclusive social event for telecom CXOs and executives. Held at the Latitude Lounge in Banyan Tree, participants were treated with great food, drinks and great company.
