Other Energy Saving Opportunities

Energy Logic prioritizes the most effective energy reduction strategies, but it is not intended to be a comprehensive list of energy reduction measures. Here are some additional actions for data center managers to evaluate:

  • Unplug Ghost Servers: In many data centers, older servers might be doing less important tasks. Over time, as the tasks from that older server are transitioned on to a newer server, the old inefficient server never gets disconnected. These are known as “ghost servers” and should be identified and disconnected to conserve energy.
  • Optimize Storage: Storage is another area that presents opportunities for energy savings. Consolidating data storage from direct attached storage to “virtualized” network attached storage will reduce the amount of power consumed because of the size of the network attached storage. Using storage with faster disks will also consume more power, so it is a good practice to reorganize data so less frequently used data is on slower drives.
  • Evaluate Economizer Use: Use economizers where appropriate to allow outside air to be used to support data center cooling during colder months, creating opportunities for energy-free cooling. With today's high-density computing environment, economizers can be cost-effective in many more locations than might be expected.
  • Monitor Consumption: Finally, data center managers can reduce energy consumption by simply monitoring and reducing parasitic losses. These include the energy consumption costs incurred by various facility components including exterior lighting, security systems, access control systems and fire suppression systems.

Feel free to send us any additional energy-saving actions as well as the results they have had for you.
