Understanding the Cost of Data Center Downtime: An Analysis of the Financial Impact on Infrastructure Vulnerability

A supplement to the study “The Leading Root Causes of Data Center Downtime,” this white paper attempts to estimate the full costs associated with an unplanned data center outage. The analysis was based on 41 independent data centers located in the United States and concludes the following –
Total cost of partial and complete outages can be a significant expense for organizations
Total cost of outages is systematically related to the duration of the outage, as well as
the size of the data center
Certain causes of the outage are more expensive than others. IT equipment is the most
expensive root cause, while accidental/human error is least expensive.
