A few months back we shared with you a study conducted by the Ponemon Institute and commissioned by Emerson Network Power, looking into the leading root causes of data center downtime. In this issue, we share with you the second installment of this study, in which we look at data center downtime not just as a mere inconvenience, stalling business operations, but as a factor that automatically translates to lost revenue. You’d be surprised at how much a minute’s worth of downtime can cost your business!

This month we also let you listen in on Emerson Network Power Malaysia Managing Director Henry Ng’s interview with a local business radio program, discussing Emerson’s role in the movement towards green IT.

Enjoy the rest of the month!

Data Center downtime will cost you! In this issue we find just how much.

Over the course of the past decade, enterprise business has fundamentally changed, with the increase in reliance on IT systems to support business-critical applications. For many of today's enterprises -- including banks, telecommunications companies, internet service providers and cloud/co-location facilities -- data center throughput has evolved into monetized commodity. No longer simply supporting the internal needs of the organization, data center availability has become essential to many companies whose customers pay a premium for access to a variety of IT applications.

This unprecedented reliance on IT systems has forged an even stronger connection between data center availability and total cost of ownership (TCO). A single downtime event now has the potential to significantly impact the profitability and viability of an enterprise. More

Understanding the Cost of Data Center Downtime: An Analysis of the Financial Impact on Infrastructure Vulnerability

A supplement to the study “The Leading Root Causes of Data Center Downtime,” this white paper attempts to estimate the full costs associated with an unplanned data center outage. The analysis was based on 41 independent data centers located in the United States and concludes the following –
   • Total cost of partial and complete outages can be a significant expense for organizations
   • Total cost of outages is systematically related to the duration of the outage, as well as the
         size of the data center
   • Certain causes of the outage are more expensive than others. IT equipment is the most
expensive root cause, while accidental/human error is least expensive.

whitepaper here.
