Monthly mailer from Emerson Network Power

August 29, 2008

Dear Network News Subscribers,

The August edition will be my last as I have decided to move on from Emerson after 4 enjoyable years. I hope that you have enjoyed reading Network News as much as I have had putting it together.

In this edition, we present the results of the Energy Logic Symposium post-event survey that was responded to by over 2,700 Data Center and IT Managers, Consulting Engineers and senior executives that highlights. It represents a fascinating insight into their priorities and their data center initiatives.  Further to this, when coupled with a action plan (Energy Logic), a clear path to manage mounting energy costs and consumption is defined.

Thank you for your support and feedback over the past years.

Best Regards,

Toni Mercado

Emerson Network Power Successfully Concludes

Energy Logic Series

Emerson Network Power, a business of Emerson (NYSE:EMR) and global leader in enabling Business-Critical Continuity™, has successfully concluded its Energy Logic symposium series, which has covered 15 key destinations across Asia Pacific.

Significant Findings Unleashed

The survey – which polled delegates from 15 countries across southeast Asia, India and Australia between April and July this year – found availability (29%) and energy efficiency (24%) to be the top two issues among respondents. Other issues included heat density (19%), data centre consolidation (15%) and power consumption (14%).

“Over the past four years we’ve seen the gradual emergence of energy efficiency as an issue for data centre managers in the region, but only this year did the issue break into the top five areas of concern in a big way,” says Russell Perry, Emerson’s Marketing Director for Asia, who was responsible for the Symposium series.

“Interestingly the survey also shows us that power densities in Asia are following closely those found today in the U.S. Where in the past American trends were not seen as a benchmark for Asia, we can now draw much closer parallels between the regions, which has planning implications for all of us in addressing the issue at a regional scale.”

While the survey shows that 30% of respondents have already implemented some form of energy strategy in their businesses, 57% had no plans in place to address the issue.

“This response is symptomatic of an audience that has been barraged by conflicting information from the main industry players,” says Perry. “This was the single-most important problem we set out to rectify with the Energy Logic Symposiums, because confusion leads to inaction. By bringing industry leaders and decision makers together we’ve sought to find a cohesive understanding of the issues and identify appropriate solutions.”

AdaptiveXchange set to take Energy Logic further

As the premium provider of data center infrastructure technologies, Emerson will stage the first energy efficiency customer conference in Asia – AdaptiveXchange – in Shenzhen, China in December 1-5.

The AdaptiveXchange will be modeled on similar Emerson initiatives from the United States, which are widely regarded as an industry benchmark.

The upcoming AdaptiveXchange will represent a major forum for data center experts from across the region and will take the concepts introduce by Energy Logic and transform them into practical, actionable solutions that can be immediately be implemented in computer rooms and data centers.

More information on AdaptiveXchange can be found at www.AdaptiveXchangeAsia.com or by contacting joy.huang@emerson.com

Virtualization services to hit $1.35 billion by 2010

Research from Springboard estimates that virtualization software and services market in Asia Pacific will reach $ 1.35 billion with CAGR of 42% by 2010, another indication that Asia is poised to become the biggest growth market for virtualization in the future, particularly with financial institutions.

According to The Asian Banker, the Asia Pacific region is now adopting virtualization technology at a faster rate than the US. Fourteen percent of companies in Asia plan to implement virtualization in the next 12 months, compared with 12% of companies in the US.

According to Jim Lenox, VMware’s South Asia general manager, the motivation for adopting virtualization has varied significantly across Asia’s banking sector, with consolidation and cost savings as the “first-step” goal.

Blade to represent over 25% of server deployments in 2010

According to Blade.org usage of blade technology is anticipated to represent more than 25 percent of server deployments by 2010. In the future, data centers will minimize energy use and reduce carbon footprints by turning to such alternatives as water-cooled and/or container-based data centers and close-to-chassis heat rejection that can eliminate much of the 45 percent of electrical energy in the data center that is wasted by today’s cooling systems.
